LUMotorsport achieves best finish since 2020 at Formula Student UK 2024

FS team with car at Silverstone

After a year of designing, manufacturing, and countless late nights, the LUMotorsports team travelled to Silverstone from July 17-21 to compete in Formula Student UK (FSUK) 2024. Their car, LFS24, launched to an audience of sponsors, alumni, and university faculty, looked impressive with its sloping nose, large wings, and wide sidepods in the iconic pink and purple of LUM.

The competition proved challenging for the team. Arriving on Thursday to complete on-car electronics work, they struggled to get the vehicle looms functioning, making it difficult to pass technical scrutineering. The car’s complexity, with three looms and multiple functions on individual PCBs, made diagnostics tough.

Luck wasn’t on their side either. The accumulator, initially expected to pass scrutineering smoothly, refused to charge thought to be due to a snapped connector, and despite replacing it, the issue persisted. This problem hindered their ability to compete in dynamic events.

With dynamic events out of reach, the team focused on static events. They performed strongly, placing 9th in the business presentation, 13th in design, and 14th in cost, earning 306.2 points out of a possible 420. This impressive performance highlighted the team’s engineering competence and knowledge.

Ultimately, LUMotorsports achieved their best overall finish since switching to electric in 2020, placing 14th. This result, despite missing out on dynamic event points, is a testament to the team’s hard work and potential for future success.

The teams give their final comments about their time on Formula Student:

We give a massive thank you to all out sponsors and faculty who help make these cars possible and allow us to greatly expand our real-world engineering knowledge while doing something we love and hope you continue to join us on our journey towards the top of the FSUK leader board.
